The Hanna Parks and Recreation Board will host a Christmas parade this Saturday, with a fireworks display planned afterwards.
At the November 12th Hanna Town Council meeting, the governing body discussed the Parks and Recreation Board’s December 20th Christmas parade. As part of the festivities, the Board proposed a fireworks display at the baseball fields east of the shuttered Hanna Recreation Center. Mayor Charlie George announced that the Board arranged for Medicine Bow Volunteer Fire Department training officer Ed Standish to set up and oversee the show. Although Standish is not a licensed pyrotechnician, he has previously hosted fireworks displays in Medicine Bow. Mayor George added that the Hanna Fire Department has approved the event.
The Town Council explained that the fireworks show can only take place if the ground is damp and winds remain light. Councilwoman Ellen Freeman asked what would happen if weather forced a cancelation. Town Clerk Vivian Gonzales said the pyrotechnics could be stored and used during next summer’s King Coal Days.
The governing body approved the Parks and Recreation Board’s Christmas parade, with a fireworks display to follow, weather permitting.
The following month, during its December 9th meeting, the Hanna Town Council was presented with a $1,000 invoice from Bandit Fireworks of Wamsutter. Councilman Sam Sikes asked where the money would come from. Treasurer Ann Calvert said she would draw from the community events account, adding that a Bandit Fireworks representative agreed to provide the best show possible for the agreed upon price.
The Town Council reiterated that Medicine Bow Volunteer Fire Department training officer Ed Standish will be setting off the fireworks. Additionally, the pyrotechnics display will be canceled if there is no snow on the ground.
The governing body approved the $1,000 fireworks invoice.
If weather allows, the fireworks display will cap off the Parade of Lights. For a $10 entry fee, participants may decorate vehicles and trailers with Christmas lights and ornaments.
The parade is scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m. on December 20th, beginning at Hanna Town Hall and ending at the recreation center on 2nd Street. Following the procession, the festivities will continue at Mike’s Deuces, located at 204 Adams Street, with hay-rides and cookies.
