Absentee ballots for next month’s primary elections can be picked up at the Carbon County Clerk’s Office.
Primary election day is Tuesday, August 18th. Absentee voting started last Tuesday, July 21st. County Clerk Lisa Smith said registered voters can get absentee ballots by calling or visiting her office in the Carbon Building in Rawlins.
Smith said residents are not required to provide a reason to vote absentee. Ballots are available to all eligible Carbon County voters.
If you’re planning to pick up a ballot for a family member, you need your photo ID and a signed letter authorizing you to collect the ballot on their behalf.
Clerk Smith said Carbon County residents can register to vote until 5 p.m. Monday, August 3rd. Voters can still register after the deadline, but they must do so in person at the clerk’s office and cast an absentee ballot.
In addition, voters may still register at the polls on election day.
This year, Smith said the state has adopted stricter proof of identity rules.
Carbon County residents without a Wyoming driver’s license may use a passport, tribal ID, a Wyoming college identification card, or a military ID. Additional accepted forms of identification can be found on the Carbon County Clerk’s Office website.
Clerk Smith said a Wyoming driver’s license does not need to show your current address. She added that the county elections office will also accept out‑of‑state licenses, but they must be accompanied by other documents proving your residency.
Several Wyoming politicians, including Secretary of State Chuck Gray, have expressed concerns about the security of absentee and mail‑in voting. Clerk Smith assured residents that Carbon County’s elections are closely monitored to prevent fraud.
Clerk Smith encouraged the public to vote in the upcoming primary elections. She said that due to a lack of candidates, many November contests will be decided next month.

The public is advised that the Carbon Building’s elevator is currently out of order. Voters unable to climb the stairs are asked to call the Clerks Office for assistance.
All absentee ballots must be returned to the Carbon County Clerk’s Office by 7 p.m. Tuesday, August 18th.
