State lawmakers working to make schools safer
Keeping kids safe at school is key issue headed into next year’s legislative session. State lawmakers are working on legislation allowing school districts to implement classroom barricade devices. A bill is also being discussed to increase school bus safety. Emma Diercks reports.
Rawlins officials expected to approve urban deer management plan
In Rawlins tonight, city council is expected to approve on first reading a plan to reduce the urban deer population. Council has been considering a Chapter 56 state permit since early 2017 to thin the number of nuisance deer in town. After numerous work sessions, officials appear ready to take formal action on the issue. Cali O’Hare reports.
Firefighters holding Ryan Fire outside Colorado and Wyoming communities
Cloud cover and calmer winds Monday reduced the more extreme behavior seen on the Ryan Fire over the weekend. Some growth was seen in around Bear Mountain, though. Mike Ferris, public information specialist with the national team in charge of suppression efforts, reported that the fire is now 28,234 acres in size. Ferris said crews were successful at holding the fire in place at two key points—near the communities of Pearl, Colorado, and at Skyline south of Wyoming 230 in Carbon County.
Ferris added that no other structures have burned since the cabins at Jerry Park were destroyed ten days ago. Carbon County Sheriff Archie Roybal told Bigfoot 99 that the evacuation of the rural residences at Skyline went smoothly on Sunday.
Cooler and wet weather over the next several days should help fire fighters in their suppression efforts. Containment has remained unchanged for the last few days at 35 percent. The cause of the fire is believed to have been an escaped campfire. The investigation is ongoing.
CCSD2 officials reevaluating special ed budget
At the beginning of the school year, Carbon County School District Two experienced an increase in students enrolled in special education programs. The uptick comes as state funding for special ed could decrease. So administrators are looking closely at changes in the funding model made during the last legislative session. Emma Diercks reports.
