Mark Gordon addresses the public for the first time as Wyoming Governor
By Jim O’Reilly
The results of last November’s election were on full display across Wyoming Monday. From the Capitol City to county courthouses, elected officials took their oaths of office.
In Cheyenne, Mark Gordon addressed residents for the first time as governor in his inaugural address. Gordon said Wyoming’s history of being both bold and fair provides a map for the future.
Gordon noted that little appetite exists for taking on any new state taxes, but said Wyoming faces a watershed moment as it balances its needs and wants. He said if government is going to successfully meet today’s challenges, it has to become both smaller and smarter.
The former state treasurer stressed financial prudence and cautioned against using the state’s investment accounts to expand government programs. Rather than making government bigger, Gordon said, local communities need to grow. He also described Wyoming’s role as technology innovator while staying true to its roots.
Governor Gordon took the oath of office on his family’s Bible with his wife Jennie at his side. Among the 900 people in attendance at the Cheyenne Civic were Wyoming’s Congressional delegation and four former Wyoming governors.
