Young cat lovers from across Carbon County gathered in Rawlins for a 4-H sponsored fun cat show.
On Saturday afternoon, 4-H Youth Development Leader Emily Haver hosted a cat judging competition and education event for local kids at the Carbon County Fairgrounds. Haver said, with the help of Marla McNees, she has been experimenting with programs focused on teaching children about cat grooming and health.
McNees said she has done 4-H animal judging for 24 years. The Torrington resident was responsible for judging the seven felines at Saturday’s competition. She graded the cats on appearance and health. McNees also provided the young competitors with tips on the proper way to present their cats to a judge. McNees said she’s helped arrange a few children’s cat shows in the past.
When the judging was finished, the kids were ranked based on their cat handling skills. Every child received a cat toy or cat-related item as a prize.
Afterwards, Haver split the kids into groups where they answered questions about grooming, health, and overall cat care.
With spring, seemingly, here to stay, Haver said she has a lot of events planned.
While Carbon County 4-H hosted the fun cat show, kids did not need to be members of the youth organization to participate.
