Dick Cheney, the powerful United States vice president who shaped US policy after 9/11, died Monday night at age 84. His family confirmed the news in a statement. Cheney, who battled heart disease for decades and received a heart transplant in 2012, served as vice president under George W. Bush from 2001 to 2009. Over the last generation, Cheney emerged as one of Washington’s most influential and divisive figures.
Cheney rose to power throughout the 1990s and became the chief architect of America’s “war on terror.” He played a central role in the decisions that led to the invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq—efforts later criticized for their reliance on flawed intelligence and their far-reaching but unanticipated consequences.
Cheney was born in Lincoln, Nebraska. His family moved to Casper, Wyoming when he was a child.
In 1978, Cheney was elected to succeed retiring Democratic Congressman Teno Roncalio, in the U.S. House of Representatives. Cheney served for a decade in the House.
Cheney served as the 46th vice president of the United States from 2001 to 2009 under Republican President George W. Bush.
He also served as secretary of defense under Republican George Bush Senior, between 1989 and 1993.
A statement from the Cheney family said the former vice president died due to complications of pneumonia and cardiac and vascular disease.
