The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is this Saturday. Solemn ceremonies are scheduled across the country and in Wyoming to mark the day in 2001 when nearly 3,000 lives were lost in separate attacks orchestrated by Islamic terrorists.
In Cheyenne, Governor Mark Gordon will join with others in a wreath-laying ceremony. In a statement issued yesterday, “We remember that day and honor all those who sacrificed so much, who answered the call, and who continue to ensure the world remembers there is no better friend, no worse enemy than the people of the United States of America.”
The ceremony will begin at 6:30 a.m. at the State Capitol and is open to the public. Governor Gordon will join The Adjutant General MG Greg Porter and Wyoming Office of Homeland Security Director Lynn Budd for the ceremony. Recognition of wreaths will begin at approximately 7:40. The ceremony will include performances from the Cheyenne All-City Children’s Chorus and the Wyoming Fire Service Combined Pipes and Drums from Casper Fire-EMS Department and the Lander Fire Department. The Wyoming Highway Patrol will post colors.
In Rawlins, the 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb is set to begin at 3 p.m. this Saturday at Rawlins High School Stadium. The event is designed to memorialize the 403 first responders who died who died on the day of the attacks, as well as the more than 400 who have died since from 9/11 related illnesses.
Rawlins resident Alice Tink Day, who has organized annual ceremonies commemorating that fateful day, said this year people will have an opportunity to run, walk or climb in honor of those fallen heroes.
Participants will be allowed to rest as needed during the event. It is not a race. It’s a memorial. People can register in advance, or beginning at 2 p.m. on the day of the events. The Pledge of Allegiance takes place at 3 p.m.
