The Natrona County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a weekend shooting that left two people injured at Alcova Reservoir.

On the evening of Saturday, July 5th, Natrona County deputies responded to a “shots fired” call at Alcova Reservoir, roughly seven miles north of the Carbon County border. Once at the scene, deputies found that a group of campers had engaged in a heated argument after several individuals tried to prevent one member from driving under the influence.

According to a media release by the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office, the intoxicated man, later identified as a Colorado resident, allegedly pointed a rifle at another individual who tried to stop him from getting into his vehicle. In response, the second male, who is from Casper, fired his handgun.

The intoxicated male with the rifle and an unidentified female bystander were each shot once in the leg. Both victims were transported to a local hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Natrona County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Kiera Hett announced that the Colorado resident was released from the hospital, while the female victim remained hospitalized as of Monday afternoon.

After assisting the victims, Natrona County Sheriff’s deputies determined there was no ongoing threat to public safety in the area. The Casper resident, who fired his pistol, was detained for the investigation and later released.

The incident remains under active investigation by the Natrona County Sheriff’s Office.
