Cracking down on so-called “ghost guns” is part of the Biden administration’s effort to crack down on violent crime. At the White House Monday, the president announced a ban on the do-it-yourself kits that don’t include serial numbers.

Statistics from American cities with the biggest crime problems do not support the political theater of yesterday’s announcement. In Chicago, only 139 of the 11,258 firearms confiscated in 2020 were made from kits. Philadelphia police reported that 2% of the 4,234 guns they took off criminals homemade.

A 2019 Justice Department study found that 43% of criminals purchased their weapons on the black market, but none made their weapons at home. Other studies show the popularity of ghost guns has risen over the last two years.

Wyoming Senator John Barrasso was skeptical about the president’s real intent with yesterday’s announcement.

“The people of Wyoming see President Biden’s executive action for what it really is: an unconstitutional, backdoor gun grab.”

The senator said yesterday’s event on the White House lawn was an attempt to distract from the real reason violent crime is on the increase.

“If Democrats are serious about combating crime, they need to stop defunding the police and start prosecuting criminals,” the senator said in a statement. “Attacking the constitutional rights of Americans is not the answer.”

The ban will likely be tested in courts. Nevada’s “ghost gun” ban was ruled unconstitutional.
