A sure sign that summer is coming: WYDOT maintenance crews on Tuesday reopened the section of Highway 70 across Battle Pass that has been closed all winter. The gates swung open around noon yesterday, days before the Memorial Day Weekend.
The gates were closed on December 4 last year. The highway connecting Encampment and Baggs is one of several high-elevation mountain roads in Wyoming that closes annually in late autumn when the low traffic count and deep snow accumulations render plowing operations impractical.
WYDOT maintenance crews may be in the area in the coming weeks to make repairs to items like guardrail or sign posts damaged by snow. Stay alert for workers in the area and be prepared to slow down.
Meanwhile, WYO 130 over the Snowy Range remains closed but appears likely to reopen by the weekend.
