Joe Biden was silent on school security in a prime-time speech last night where he called for gun control legislation sure to run into stiff opposition in the Senate.

Wyoming Senator John Barrasso is poised to fight any of the rollbacks on Second Amendments Biden proposed last night and earlier this week, when he called for a ban on 9-mm handguns. Following the schoolhouse shooting in Uvalde, Texas two weeks ago, Barrasso said in a statement, “We all agree that we must find ways to curb violent crime and keep guns out of the hands of the criminals. Legislation that takes away our constitutional rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment will not solve it.”

Biden last night called for a gun control push that includes:
1. A ban “Assault Weapons”
2. A on ban “high capacity” magazines.
3. If banning is not possible, then raise purchase age for AR-15s and similar rifles to 21
4. “Strengthen background checks”
5. “Enact [a] safe storage law”
6. “red flag law”
7. “Repeal the immunity of gun manufacturers from liability.”

It’s unclear how any of the measures would have prevented the carnage that happened in Uvalde, Texas or Buffalo, New York—the two recent shooting incidents that reignited the Second Amendment debate.

For instance, both Illinois and California have the most severe gun control measures in the country, including red flag laws, but are regularly in the news for gun-related violence and deaths.

Biden made no mention last night of making schools more secure even though reports indicate the Uvalde gunman entered the school through an unlocked door. Nor did the president address questions about why Uvalde police stood by without taking action to stop the rampage.
