Wranglers contracted by the federal government will round up and remove over 2,000 wild horses from the herd in the Red Desert near Rawlins beginning next month.

The Bureau of Land Management is conducting the operation to reduce overgrazing. The herd has outgrown what is sustainable on the wild horse complex that sprawls across four counties.  Cali O’Hare has details.

The public can observe the wild horse gather from a safe distance designated by the Bureau of Land Management. Participants must provide their own transportation, water and food. The BLM recommends a four-wheel drive, high clearance vehicle. If you plan to attend, you must notify Sarah Beckwith at sbeckwith@blm.gov or 307-347-5207 in advance. The gather is expected to begin on or after October 6th, 2020.
