Rawlins Mayor Terry Weickum will cast a vote tonight when an amendment regarding solid waste haulers comes before city council on third and final reading.

The amendment clarifies language in Title 8 of municipal code pertaining to the types of haulers who must obtain a license and bond to transport refuse to the landfill. Existing code does not distinguish between the commercial haulers already licensed to do business in the city on a regular basis and freelancers who pick up a few dollars on the side making an occasional run to the dump.

The mayor sat out the first vote when a councilmember raised a question about a possible perceived conflict of interest because Weickum did some sign work for Dirty Boyz in the past. Weickum sought legal counsel, and voted at the second hearing. He’ll be voting again tonight. Cali O’Hare reports on what’s at stake.
