The Carbon County Commissioners on Tuesday officially selected Interim County Clerk Lisa Smith to head the office.

Prior to the vote, commissioners interviewed the applicants for the vacant county clerk position.

Commission Chairman Travis Moore explained that following Commissioner Gwynn Bartlett’s resignation from the clerk’s office, to assume her newly elected role on the board, the Carbon County Republican Party was required to submit nominees for the open position.

As Bigfoot99 reported on Monday, the Republican Party held a special meeting on Saturday, January 18th, to select three applicants for board consideration. Interim County Clerk Lisa Smith was the only person to submit a completed nomination packet before the January 12th deadline.

However, three applicants must be presented to the board of county commissioners. To fulfill the party’s legal obligation, former Republican Party Chairman Joey Correnti and current Vice Chair Michelle Sidun nominated themselves for the county clerk’s position.

At Tuesday’s County commissioners meeting, Chairman Moore said both Correnti and Sidun withdrew their nominations prior to the meeting, leaving Smith as the only viable candidate for the clerk’s office. Moore asked Smith to speak to the board before being sworn in by District Judge Dawnessa Snyder.

Smith explained that she began working for the Carbon County Clerk’s Office in 2003. From the start, Smith said she understood the importance of the position.

The following year, she volunteered to conduct elections in Carbon County. Despite being unprepared for the enormity of the task, Smith said she has overseen more than 20 local elections successfully.

Smith stressed that election integrity has been her top priority while serving in the clerk’s office for over 21 years. During this time, she has gained experience in every aspect of the job.

If appointed to serve as county clerk, Smith swore to follow all state and federal laws and uphold the duties of the office.

The board unanimously voted to appoint Lisa Smith as county clerk until 2026. Smith was sworn in by District Judge Snyder.

The county commissioners each expressed their confidence in Smith’s abilities and wished her good luck in her new position.
