A Sunday afternoon derailment west of Rawlins shut down train traffic.
For the second time this summer, a derailment has brought train traffic to a halt in Carbon County. As of yesterday afternoon, no trains were running through the area.
Bigfoot99 reached out to Union Pacific Media Relations Specialist Robynn Tysver for details about the incident. In an email response, Tysver wrote that around 3:00 p.m., on Sunday afternoon, roughly 34 train cars derailed eight miles east of Wamsutter; no one was injured. Clean up is underway and the incident is under investigation.
This crash marks the second derailment in our area this summer. On the morning of June 9th, approximately 15 Union Pacific rail cars came off the track at Walcott Junction, north of Interstate 80, buckling the tracks and blocking rail traffic in both directions. Despite the severity of the incident, Union Pacific crews had the tracks reopened by the following day.
Union Pacific Media Relations Specialist Robynn Tysver did not provide any more details on Sunday’s derailment west of Rawlins. We will likely have to wait for the Federal Railroad Administration to release its findings on the incident, which may take up to six months.
