Rawlins DDA Mainstreet unveiled its Veterans Day exhibit at the Ferguson Building last month. The Rawlins Downtown Development Authority Mainstreet and Bank of Commerce worked together to create the display honoring local veterans.
DDA Mainstreet Director Pam Thayer explained that she uses the large front windows of the Ferguson Building, located on the northwest corner of 5th and Cedar Streets, to display seasonal decorations. Thayer said design committee volunteer Marcella Redmond brainstormed the Veterans Day exhibit. Residents were asked to submit a picture and brief description of a service member from Carbon County.
Thayer printed out the pictures and information provided by the family members and placed them inside of picture frames. The frames were then hung from fishing line in front of a red, white, and blue background in the windows of the Ferguson Building.
This is the first year for the Rawlins DDA Mainstreet veterans’ exhibit. Thayer said the design committee was hoping to get at least 25 submissions of Carbon County veterans. As of yesterday morning, Thayer said she has received nearly double that amount.
Thayer said the pictures are displayed in chronological order of when the veteran served, from 1918 all the way up to the present day. The DDA Mainstreet director mentioned that the earliest Carbon County veteran featured in the exhibit served in World War One.
Since this is the first year for the Veterans Day exhibit, Thayer explained that the DDA Mainstreet design committee is still fine-tuning the display. The initial call for submissions requested a single vertical photograph of each veteran. However, some people submitted horizontal photos, while others provided multiple pictures. Thayer said the design committee did their best to accommodate the different sizes and number of photos.
Rawlins DDA Mainstreet is working with Bank of Commerce on the Veterans Day exhibit. Bank of Commerce Marketing Administrator Nicole Murry is preparing a video slideshow of the veterans to be shown in the bank and on social media. Thayer explained that the partnership made it easier for people to submit veterans for inclusion in the Ferguson Building display.
The submission period for the Veterans Day exhibit officially closed on October 18th. For more information, call DDA Mainstreet design committee member Marcella Redmond at 321-5201 or visit Bank of Commerce, located at 221 3rd Street in Rawlins, to submit your application.
Thayer said the exhibit will run until Monday, December 2nd.
