Work continues on the Dixon Airport expansion project at the southern end of the county.

In January of 2023, an airport master plan was created for the Dixon Airport. The master plan recommended expanding the runway to accommodate larger and faster planes. The entire expansion project is estimated to cost roughly $23 million, with the Federal Aviation Administration funding 90% of the work.

Expanding the runway means moving the existing airplane hangars out of the way. During the July 15th Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Commission Chairwoman Sue Jones said three companies responded to a request for proposal to demolish the Dixon Airport hangars and tear up the connecting asphalt roads.

Of the three companies that responded to the request for proposal, Chairwoman Jones said Savery Creek Enterprises submitted the lowest bid. The local contractor’s bid came in much lower than its competitors.

Chairwoman Jones said Ardurra, the engineering firm overseeing the Dixon Airport expansion project, reviewed the bids and recommended awarding the hangar demolition contract to Savery Creek Enterprises.

Commissioner Garrett Irene asked why Savery Creek’s bid was so much lower than the other two contractors. Chairwoman Jones said the company is local. The outfit is located in Dixon and, therefore, doesn’t have to spend a lot of money moving equipment and manpower to the job site.

The county commissioners voted to award Savery Creek Enterprises the contract to demolish the Dixon Airport hangars and connecting roads.
