The Carbon County Office of Emergency Management is asking residents to take a short online study about hazard prevention and preparation.
Emergency Manager Lenny Layman is updating the Region Three Hazard Mitigation Plan. Region Three encompasses both Carbon and Albany Counties.
Layman describes “Hazard Mitigation” as actions that can help reduce or eliminate long-term risks caused by hazards, such as wildfires, drought, floods, and severe winter storms.
Speaking to Bigfoot99, Layman said having an up-to-date hazard mitigation plan will help Carbon County predict, manage, and pay for large-scale disasters.
Every five years, the Wyoming Office of Homeland Security pays to have a new Hazard Mitigation Plan created for each region of the state. The Region Three plan was last updated in 2019. This year, the Boulder, Colorado-based consulting firm, Synergy Disaster Recovery was tasked with developing a new hazard mitigation plan for our area.
Layman is asking residents, organizations, and businesses to contribute to the hazard mitigation planning process through an online survey. Layman said the Carbon County-specific survey will allow him to better understand how residents view and prepare for hazards.
Layman said the online survey is quick and easy to complete. The emergency manager said data collected through the survey will enable the 2024 Region Three Hazard Mitigation Plan to be as comprehensive as possible.
Layman said Carbon County is home to wildfires, floods, and high winds. The emergency manager said by participating in the survey, residents can identify the disasters they want the county to be best prepared against.
Layman said mitigation planning helps communities take action to reduce the impact of a disaster before it occurs. A well-informed hazard mitigation plan will help residents, business owners, and municipalities plan and design different methods of risk reduction.
Layman is asking every Carbon County resident to take the 2024 Hazard Mitigation Plan survey. The emergency manager said mitigation is an investment in a community’s future safety and sustainability.
Layman said he expects the updated hazard mitigation plan to be adopted by January 2025.
