For the first time in eight years, Stage II fire restrictions are in effect on National Forest lands in Southern Wyoming.

A long stretch of hot, dry weather has pushed fuels on the Medicine Bow-Routt National Forest to the ignition point, say officials with the U.S. Forest Service. Carbon County is in the restricted area along with northwest Colorado and Albany County.

The prohibitions include no open campfires, even in established campgrounds and picnic  areas. ATVs and other motorized vehicles must stick to establish roads to avoid sparking a fire.

The last time Stage II restrictions were in place on area forests was 2012. Stage I restrictions have been in place since July 3rd . The Bureau of Land Management also implemented fire restrictions in Carbon County. Cali O’Hare has details.
