Carbon County Public Health will offer drive-up flu shots later this month.

During yesterday’s Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Public Health Nurse Manager Amanda Brown said she would like to provide flu vaccines to residents in their cars. Brown said people may still choose to receive flu shots inside of a county public health office, as well.

Brown said the first drive through flu vaccine event in Rawlins is scheduled for September 30th. Brown said Carbon County Public Health would like to hold the event at the county fairgrounds.

Brown said Carbon County Public Health intends to hold four flu vaccine events, two in Rawlins and two in Saratoga. Brown said the parking lot of the Platte Valley Community Center would be an ideal location for the vaccination event. If more dates are needed, Brown said Public Health will increase the number of flu vaccine events.

Brown said the population of Rawlins and Saratoga makes the drive through vaccination workable. Brown said Carbon County Public Health is planning on holding traditional flu vaccination events in every other town within the county. The nurse manager said if it is available, a new COVID vaccine will be administered with the flu shots.

Carbon County Health Officer Dr. Duane Ables said COVID cases have started to rise. Dr. Ables said the nationwide COVID death rate has increased from 1.4% to 2%. Dr. Ables said Carbon County has had one COVID hospitalization in the past two weeks. The county health officer recommended that residents stay current on their flu and COVID vaccinations.

Brown said she’ll provide the board with more information on the Carbon County Public Health’s vaccination events when it is available.
