Awareness about food uncertainty among certain populations in the county and around the nation heightened this week as the shutdown of the U.S. federal government, which began October 1, could impact the issue of food stamps through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.

SNAP is 100% federally funded.

States including Missouri, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Illinois, and Washington have confirmed they will not be able to issue November SNAP benefits unless the federal government resumes funding.

Legal challenges are ongoing.

Governor Mark Gordon issued a statement this week saying that his top priority is to ensure that families across the state in need of assistance do not go hungry.

The governor will hold a news conference this afternoon to discuss possible options open to him.
