The Wyoming Game and Fish Department announced later season dates for several deer hunt areas in our region.
Earlier this week, Game and Fish posted an article reminding the public that the start of deer hunting has been pushed back in some areas of southeast Wyoming. Specifically, Deer Hunt Areas 15, 59, and 64, along with Type 2 and Type 6 licenses in Areas 59 and 64. Hunting dates in those sections of the state have been postponed by roughly two and a half weeks.
Traditionally held from October 1st to 14th, the hunts will now take place from October 20th to 31st. Wyoming Game and Fish said many sportsmen and landowners reported that the hunt areas were often overcrowded.
Laramie District Biologist Keaton Weber said Game and Fish have been considering changes to the hunting dates in those areas for some time. Weber is quoted as saying, “Some of these areas haven’t changed in more than 30 years, so these dates are a significant shift. But our conversations with landowners and hunters showed us that it was time for something different.”
Weber added that the later dates are meant to improve the chance of a successful hunt by timing the season with the rut and cooler fall weather. The Laramie District Biologist said the new season dates in Hunt Area 15 now overlap with neighboring hunt areas, potentially increasing hunter success rates and giving all sportsmen, “a bit more elbow room.”
Game and Fish reminds the public that Hunt Area 15, located in nonresident Region T, is a priority herd for chronic wasting disease sampling this year. Hunters are encouraged to submit CWD samples as part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to monitor and manage the disease.
