Byron Matthews, a longtime firefighter from Cheyenne, has been named State Fire Marshal. Governor Mark Gordon announced the appointment yesterday.

Matthews replaces Mark Young, who is retiring after serving as interim State Fire Marshal following the retirement of Michael Reed in August, 2022.

Mathews has been employed by Cheyenne Fire Rescue (CFR) since 1999 and currently serves as Fire Marshal Division Chief. Mathews has worked through all the ranks at CFR, including Firefighter, Engineer and Lieutenant. In addition to serving as State Fire Marshal, Matthews will serve as Director of the Department of Fire Prevention and Electrical. Safety, which includes conducting fire and electrical inspections of public buildings, firefighter training and arson investigations.

Reed, a former Chief of Police in Rawlins, served as State Fire Marshall for six years before retiring last summer. The agency has a biennial budget of $7.3 million and a staff of 33 in four divisions.
