The town of Hanna is preparing for the construction of a new South Central Wyoming EMS ambulance barn.

During the August 13th Hanna town council meeting, Ordinance 405 was read for the first time. Mayor Jayson Nordquist explained that Ordinance 405 amends the town’s existing special use permit regulations to allow emergency service centers to be constructed in residential zones. Mayor Nordquist said the ordinance also prohibits emergency vehicles from using sirens in the neighborhood unless a genuine emergency is occurring.

Mayor Nordquist said the amended ordinance is needed to allow SCWEMS to build a new ambulance barn on the site of the former elementary school at the corner of School and Adams Streets.

SCWEMS used federal American Rescue Plan Act, or ARPA, funding to cover half the price of the plot of land in Hanna.

Speaking at the June 18th Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, SCWEMS Board Chairwoman Irene Archibald said the medical transport service is continuing to seek additional funding for the project.

At the June 18th commissioners meeting, Archibald said she expects the Hanna ambulance barn to cost roughly $520,000 to build.

SCWEMS currently stores its ambulances inside the Hanna Fire Station, where space is limited.

During the August 13th Hanna town council meeting, the governing body voted to approve Ordinance 405 on the first reading. All ordinance changes must be read during three separate public meetings before being adopted into law.
