The Hanna town council agrees to pay $38,000 to fix the town’s water treatment plant.

Earlier this year, at the January 9th Hanna town council meeting, Mayor Jon Ostling said the chlorine storage room at the town’s water treatment plant needs repairs. Mayor Ostling said Craig Kopasz from Engineering Associates in Saratoga will provide the town with an estimated cost to fix the crumbling concrete in the chlorine room.

Chlorine is commonly used in water treatment plants to kill harmful bacteria and pathogens present in the water. However, chlorine gas is corrosive and can eat away at surfaces, pipes, and other equipment. In Hanna, the chemical has severely corroded the concrete walls in the town’s water treatment plant chlorine room.

Three months later, at the April 9th Hanna town council meeting, Mayor Ostling said the town received a cost estimate from Westco Construction and Services totaling $37,990 to repair the chlorine room.

Hanna Town Councilman Sam Sikes asked where the money will come from. Town Treasurer Ann Calvert said the water treatment plant budget will cover the cost of repairs. Calvert suggested the town act fast to lock in the cost estimate.

Town Clerk Vivian Gonzales said replacement parts are expected to arrive in town within a month. Mayor Ostling said the job should only take a single day to complete. Clerk Gonzales said the repairs should be finished before summer lawn watering and irrigation puts additional strain on the water treatment plant.

The Hanna town council voted to pay Westco Construction and Services $37,990 to repair the chlorine room at the town’s water treatment plant.
