A new food outlet aimed at helping low-income households will open in Rawlins this week.
The Rawlins Food Pantry will open on Friday, July 7th.
A news release from the sponsoring organization says that WYO Help is a community action agency that allows clients to choose the items they want from the store’s shelves.
The Rawlins store will be WYO HELP’s 2nd food pantry in Wyoming. The first opened in Torrington in 2018. Both food pantries will be open Mon, Wed, Fri from 11am to 4pm by appointment only.
According to the Wyo Help web site, Carbon is one of six counties in Wyoming that ranks below the statewide cost of living index of 100. Rawlins has a score of 95.
Only 4 counties in Wyoming scored greater than 100: Laramie at 105, Sublette–101, Lincoln–110, and Teton–167.
Among the six counties in Wyoming that WYO Help serves, Carbon County has one of the highest cost of living. The cost of medical care is also highest in Carbon County.
So eating right is important. The challenge is the cost. Statewide inflation was 7.3% across the board last year with the rate of inflation on food standing at 15.1%, more than double the inflation rate for other products.
The new food outlet is aimed at providing part of the answer.
The pantries are open by appointment only. No address or phone number provided. Our call to Executive Director Kyle Berger went unanswered Wednesday afternoon. We’ll keep trying. They’re obviously busy.
