Tonight, Wednesday, December 18th, the Rawlins Parks and Recreation Department is hosting a Christmas parade in the city.

Every year, the Rawlins Chamber of Commerce organizes the city’s annual Holiday Parade. Parks and Rec Director Nikki Howell explained that the Chamber was too understaffed to plan the Christmas event this year. Instead of disappointing the community, Howell said she decided to take on that responsibility herself.

Howell said that after discovering the Chamber of Commerce could not host the Christmas parade, she met with department heads and had registration flyers posted around the city within four days. As of Monday afternoon, 11 private floats and a variety of local organizations have agreed to participate in the parade.

Howell explained that the parade will begin outside the Carbon County Courthouse, on the corner of 5th and West Pine Streets. The route runs through the downtown business district, finishing at the Old Depot, on West Front Street.

After the parade, the community is invited to the Depot to meet Santa and Mrs. Claus and enjoy some treats.

Howell said many private organizations and city departments donated their time and resources to the event.

Bigfoot99 asked if the Rawlins Parks and Recreation Department will permanently take over the Christmas parade from the Chamber of Commerce. Howell said her staff are prepared to organize the holiday event for the foreseeable future.

Parks and Rec Director Howell thanked everyone who helped organize the Christmas Parade on such short notice.

The Rawlins Holiday Parade begins tonight, at 6:00pm, outside the Carbon County Courthouse. Prizes for the best non-profit, business, and individual floats will be awarded during the event.
