Wintry conditions this weekend, including slick roads and high winds, resulted in several crashes on Interstate 80, forcing traffic to be routed off the highway and through the middle of Rawlins.

The first incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Friday morning. In a social media post, the Rawlins Police Department stated interstate traffic was being routed through the city because of a wreck. Residents were told to expect additional traffic along the Business Route of I-80, including Spruce and Cedar Streets.

Rawlins Police were on hand to direct the additional traffic through the city.

While the increase in semi-truck traffic led some Rawlins residents to complain on social media about a lack of space for local drivers, others expressed gratitude to the Rawlins Police Department for ensuring the big rigs passed safely through the city.

On Saturday morning, Rawlins’ residents faced yet another round of detoured traffic. A crash involving multiple semi-trucks shut down Interstate 80, again.

At around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, the Rawlins Police Department posted on social media about a serious crash at exit 215 on I-80. Interstate traffic was, once again, routed through the city and Rawlins Police asked residents to avoid 3rd Street, specifically where it intersects with Spruce and Cedar Streets.

At the time, the Wyoming Highway Patrol estimated that clearing the wreck would take between four and five hours. Like the Rawlins Police Department, the Highway Patrol also encouraged city residents to avoid the detour route. It appears that the wreckage was cleared by noon.

Unconfirmed reports indicate at least one person was injured in Saturday’s wreck.

Bigfoot99 has reached out to Wyoming Highway Patrol for more information about this weekend’s crashes. However, the agency has not responded to the inquiry by the time of this reporting.
