An Encampment charity organization is looking for scholarship recipients.
Jerry Kraft of the Encampment Beef Committee is asking for Encampment high school graduates already engaged in secondary schooling to contact him. Kraft said every year the committee awards two local students with money to continue their studies. He said the Encampment Beef Committee is offering scholarships to students in their third year of post graduate education.
Kraft said the Encampment Beef Committee has two $600 scholarships to offer. He said the money can be used for any kind of education, such as trade school or college.
Kraft said he made an easy decision last year. Kraft said only two Encampment students met the criteria for the scholarships. This year, he is asking students interested in receiving a scholarship to email him with a story about their backgrounds and where they see themselves in the future.
Kraft said the Encampment Beef Committee used to provide high school seniors with scholarships. He said two years ago the committee chose to change the requirements to meet the needs of students who, he says, were more in need of the money.
Kraft said Jim York founded the Encampment Beef Committee in the 1970’s as a way to support the town’s youth at the county fair. He said the committee now has nearly 80 members. Kraft said he’s always looking for more people to join the committee. He said you do not need to be a beef producer to join.
Kraft said membership in the Encampment Beef Committee costs $100 a year. He said members are offered a beef dinner and a picnic as a membership perk. Kraft said no one is obligated to take part in any aspect of the beef committee’s events.
Kraft said people can show up to an Encampment Beef Committee meeting or event with $100 and become a member on the spot.
To apply for an Encampment Beef Committee scholarship, email Jerry Kraft at jlkraft@carbonpower.net by August 1st. Kraft said to respond, “with a story about where you’ve been and where you are going.”
