Snowpack and water equivalency levels for the Upper North Platte River basin have declined over the last couple of weeks. Moderating temperatures and dry weather are the reason.

According to the latest report from the NRCS, snowpack was at 106 percent of median compared to conditions measured over the last 30 years. In other words, levels are about on par. In mid-January the number was 120 percent. The snowpack for the North Platte drainages on both sides of the Wyoming border are much better than last year when they were well below average at 78 percent of mean.

Statewide, Wyoming’s snowpack/SWE is 88% of median with a basin high of 107% (Laramie) and a basin low of 58% (South Platte). Last year (2021), the state SWE was at 76% of median, and at 107% in 2020.
