The town of Medicine Bow is requesting bids for the former marshal’s home, which is now on the market for sale.
The Medicine Bow Marshal’s Office was established in 2019 using impact assistance money from nearby wind turbine construction projects. The funding was used to buy law enforcement equipment for the newly created marshal’s department, as well as purchase a house in town. When needed, the home, located at 724 Maple Street, was offered for rent to the town’s marshals. Deputy Chris Tirpak was the last officer to occupy the house.
By the beginning of this year, the impact assistance money used to fund the Medicine Bow Marshal’s Office was quickly running out. In February, citing a lack of cash, the town voted to dissolve the marshal’s department and sell all the police equipment, including vehicles, weapons, and ammunition.
Last month, the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office made a deal with Medicine Bow to purchase three patrol vehicles and three police rifles for $55,000 and an agreement to have sheriff’s deputies patrol the town for 30 hours a month for one year.
Medicine Bow officials must decide what to do with the remaining items, specifically the house on Maple Street. During the July 8th Medicine Bow town council meeting, Clerk Treasurer Karen Heath informed the governing body that an appraisal had been done on the former marshal’s home. Clerk Heath asked the council how they wanted to dispose of the house and other unneeded town equipment.
The town originally paid $63,000 for the Maple Street house. Last month, the property was appraised at $62,000. The governing body agreed that avoiding a realtor will provide the town with the best financial outcome from the sale. Mayor Justin George said the town can decide how much money they will accept for the house.
Medicine Bow Attorney Cameron Smith said the town should require the buyer to sign a purchase agreement as soon as the offer is accepted. A purchase agreement is a legally binding document used in real estate transactions that outlines the terms and conditions of the sale.
Councilwoman Kristi Wickizer motioned to sell the former marshal’s department house for no less than $63,000 and a signed purchase agreement.
The town of Medicine Bow is currently accepting offers for 724 Maple Street. Bidding for the former marshal’s house, as well as the other unneeded pieces of town equipment, ends at 5:00pm next Monday, August 9th. Bids may be physically delivered to the Medicine Bow town hall, located at 414 Birch Street, or emailed to medbowtown@gmail.com.
