The newly reformed Medicine Bow Recreation Board continues to put together community events.
Over the weekend, Medicine Bow residents were treated to several Christmas themed activities thanks to the town’s recreation board members.
This past September, Old West Bar owner Kristy Wickizer, who is now a town council member, and three other Medicine Bow residents offered to recreate the town’s defunct recreation board. The council approved and Wickizer began planning a Halloween party and haunted house.
With Halloween over, Wickizer and the other rec board members have put together several Christmas events for the town.
Speaking to Bigfoot99, Wickizer said she reformed the recreation board to provide residents with fun activities.
Wickizer said in the past, Medicine Bow had several boards and committees to plan community events. The councilwoman said the boards ceased to exist as the population declined.
Over the weekend, the Medicine Bow Recreation Board staged a Christmas tree lighting and vendor fair in the community hall. The big man himself, Santa Claus, was also in attendance. Wickizer said Santa left his mailbox so children can send him letters.
The Medicine Bow Recreation Board is currently running a Christmas tree decorating contest. Wickizer said residents can send pictures of their decorated trees to the town to be entered to win a prize.
The winner of the Christmas tree decorating contest will receive a stained-glass ornament of a tree.
When the holidays are finished, Wickizer said the rec board will take some time off from planning events. Wickizer said in February, the recreation board will begin organizing more adult-oriented activities.
Since its inception, the recreation board has operated without financial support from the town. Wickizer said the rec board subsists entirely on generous donations from Medicine Bow residents.
Last month, Wickizer requested $500 from the town budget to pay for Christmas lights and ornaments. Instead of dipping into the town’s coffers, Wickizer said the council members chose to donate their own money.
Councilwoman Sharon Kahl also offered her unused artificial Christmas tree and decorations to the town’s recreation board.
Wickizer said she is thankful for the generosity of the entire community. On top of the donations from her fellow council members, Wickizer said a local business owner bought nearly every ticket for the recreation board’s 50/50 raffle.
The outcome was no surprise. After buying all but two tickets, Steve Vinot, of SKV LLC, won the 50/50 raffle. Wickizer said Vinot donated the prize money back to the recreation board.
Wickizer said the rec board is always in need of more donations and volunteers. The councilwoman instructed anyone interested in contributing their time or money to the rec board to contact the Medicine Bow town hall.
