The economics of patient care are looking up financially for the Memorial Hospital of Carbon County, says the interim CEO.

At Tuesday’s Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Memorial Hospital of Carbon County Interim Chief Executive Officer Rex Walk provided an update on the status of the hospital. Walk explained to the board that MHCC is having success with its new hospitalist group, Rural Family Physicians. Since contracting with the team of physicians in early March, MHCC has seen more patients, which benefits the entire community, said the interim CEO.

Walk said MHCC is doing a good job recruiting additional medical staff. The interim CEO said he has hired a physician assistant and a nurse practitioner.

Walk said the hospital has also recruited a new internal medicine physician.

Memorial Hospital of Carbon County has been struggling for years to bolster its bottom line. Walk informed the board that MHCC has increased its income by 4% compared to last year.

Walk said the amount of bad debt the hospital has accrued has increased by 9% over the last year. However, the interim CEO said MHCC is doing well on keeping costs low on things the hospital can control.

Walk said the cost of medical supplies have increased by 1%, a number the interim CEO said is good when compared to the rate of inflation. Building maintenance has decreased by a third over the past year. Walk said the hospital is looking good, financially.

Walk said MHCC Chief Financial Officer Margaret Fontana will be present at the next county commissioner meeting to give a more detailed rundown of the hospital’s finances.
