A missing Cheyenne man has been found dead in the Medicine Bow Mountains.

On Monday afternoon, Carbon County Sheriff Alex Bakken released a statement saying that a the body of missing Laramie County man was located near the Six Mile Gap in the southern part of Carbon County. 61-year-old Don Nelson man was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sheriff Bakken didn’t name the deceased person in his media release, stating that the man’s identity was being withheld out of respect for the family.

However, Nelson was reported missing over the weekend. A missing person flyer lists his last known location as Fox Park on Thursday, May 30th.

Sheriff Bakken’s media release states that on the night of Saturday, June 1st, dispatchers with the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a vehicle located near the Six Mile Gap area of southeast Carbon County. The vehicle description matched Nelson’s black GMC Denali pickup.

The sheriff wrote that Classic Air Rescue and Carbon County Search and Rescue-East Division members were activated the morning of June 2nd to assist deputies in searching the area for the missing person. Sadly, the man was found deceased approximately 400 meters from his vehicle.

Sheriff Bakken thanked his deputies, Classic Air Rescue, and all of the Carbon County Search and Rescue volunteers who assisted with the search.
