This past Sunday marked the 21st anniversary of the terror attacks of 9/11.

Tink Day, a Rawlins resident, has organized a tribute every year since the attack 21 years ago. Day put together a 5K walk and stair climb for this year’s anniversary.

Over 100 people attended Day’s commemoration ceremony at the Rawlins High School football stadium. A flag ceremony with EMS personnel, Carbon County Fire Department personnel, sheriff’s deputies, Rawlins police officers, the Rawlins Fire Department, Rawlins Patriot Riders and the Girl Scouts began the day. Monty Thayer read a poem that he had written.

Police Chief Mike Ward told a story about a New York Firefighter who lost his life during the attacks. Ward said that he was found in the rubble with his bunker coat covering a civilian.

The stair climb represented the 110 floors of the Twin Towers. Sixty-four people walked the steps of Outlaw Stadium a total of 22 times. Day said that another 25 people did the 5K walk. All proceeds went to Will’s Warriors.

Days before the event, Day was presented with the Community Builder Award from the City of Rawlins. The award comes with a $100 donation. Day gave the money to Will’s Warriors. Her name will be engraved on a plaque in city hall.

Day is humble about her actions. She is proud of the city of Rawlins and thankful that she gets to call it home.

Day plans on organizing a tribute every year. The next anniversary will be on a weekday. Day says that it will be a smaller scale event.
