The National Weather Service said yesterday that barring a major rain event, the risk of flooding in Wyoming has passed this year. During Thursday’s final Wyoming flood report for this year, Riverton Warning Coordination Meteorologist Lance VandenBoogart said most of the snow has already melted across the state. However, the weatherman said enough snow exists in the mountains to present a flood risk if significant rainfall occurs. VandenBoogart said no heavy rain is predicted.
VandenBoogart said nearly all the snow below 9,000 feet has already melted. In the higher elevations, the meteorologist said the Sierra Madre and Snowy Range Mountains still have over a foot of snow water equivalent.
VandenBoogart said the snowpack in the Upper North Platte Basin is average for this time of year. The meteorologist said his data shows no indications of any upcoming flooding.
VandenBoogart said the North Platte River has crested. Assuming our area does not receive heavy rainfall in the coming week, the meteorologist said the water level will continue to drop.
VandenBoogart said he thinks our area made it through this year’s flood season without any serious problems.
VandenBoogart said his weather models are showing warm temperatures and little to no rainfall in the next couple of weeks. However, VandenBoogart said a heavy rain event may still cause major flooding. The meteorologist encouraged people to continue to monitor the weather forecast.
VandenBoogart said the risk of flooding appears to be behind us.
