Weather buffs: Beginning today, Thursday, August 18th, the KCYS WSR-88D radar operated by the NOAA National Weather Service in Cheyenne will be down for approximately seven days for maintenance.
A generator, fuel tanks, and accompanying components will be worked on or updated with new equipment necessary to support the radar’s operation during periods of commercial power outages, especially when hazardous weather is present.
The generator update is the fifth in a series of major projects intended to keep the NEXRAD equipment operational for at least another decade. Radars are critically important in remote sensing severe storms, snow, wildfire smoke, and weather forecasting for critical watches and warnings. NWS forecasters will use surrounding radars and satellite information to continue issuing any warnings, when needed.
During the downtime, weather radars in Riverton, Rapid City, South Dakota, Denver and Grand Junction, Colorado will be operational.
