The heat is turned on at the Saratoga Public Library where they will celebrate mathematical Pi Day with actual pie.

Tuesday, March 14th, or 3/14, is commonly referred to as Pi Day. Pi, or 3.14, is the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. On 3/14, the Saratoga Public Library will host a series of Pi related games and activities. Library Branch Manager Sue Paddock said the proclamation came from the Carbon County Library System’s head office. Paddock said each town’s library will host their own Pi-themed events.

The library is offering Pi sudoku as well. While mazes and word searches are self-explanatory, our Bigfoot99 reporter had to ask what a Pi “skyline” is. Paddock described a skyline as coloring a grid based on the value of Pi found in a particular row.

If attendees choose to, their artwork will be displayed in the library.

In previous years, the Saratoga Public Library has offered small math related games. Paddock said this year marks the first time actual pie will be available for Pi Day.

The library director said she doesn’t know what kind of pie will be served during the Pi Day event. The main branch supplies the baked goods.

March 14th is also the day the Saratoga Library is offering free tax services. Paddock said to make an appointment by calling 710-1022 or coming into the library and speaking with her.

Most people only know Pi to three decimal places, hence why 3/14 represents the mathematical symbol. In 2021, scientists from a university in Switzerland used cloud computing to calculate Pi to 100 trillion digits.
