The first dose of Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccine was administered in Wyoming yesterday to a public health nurse in Cheyenne. Health care providers in Carbon County will have to wait at least another week.

Wyoming’s first shipment of Pfizer’s “messenger RNA” (mRNA) vaccine, 4,875 doses in all, arrived Monday.

The Wyoming Department of Health put Casper, Cheyenne, Cody and Jackson at the top of the list for the first drop of doses in the state. Carbon County will have to wait until at least next week when another vaccine, the one manufactured by Massachusetts-based Moderna, could be shipped.

Moderna’s mRNA vaccine is still waiting FDA approval, which could come as early as Friday. Once cleared for public use, 800 doses will be sent here. Then, Carbon County Public Health will begin Phase 1-A of vaccinations.

Healthcare providers likely be the first to receive the vaccine. The general public won’t be eligible until late January or early February. Cali O’Hare reports.
