The Rawlins governing body has finalized its new meeting schedule.

As reported by Bigfoot99, on July 15th, the Rawlins City Council voted to begin its sessions earlier in the day. The governing body currently convenes at 7:30 p.m., but city officials acknowledged that sessions often extend late into the evening. The Council members agreed to begin the meetings earlier but were unable to agree upon a time.

The governing body directed City Attorney Pinita Maberry-Nave to draft an ordinance amending the section of the Rawlins city code that addresses Council meeting start times, leaving the time blank until the Council reaches an agreement.

All ordinance changes must be read and approved at three separate public hearings. During the second reading of the amended ordinance, Mayor Jacquelin Wells asked the Council to consider an earlier meeting start time, saying she would prefer to begin at 6:00 or 6:30 p.m. Council members Derek Elliott and Tonya Lewman supported a 6:00 start, while Bruce Seilaff and Terry Patterson favored a later time.

After a lengthy discussion, the decision was made to start City Council meetings at 6:00 p.m. The measure was approved by the entire governing body.

At the September 2nd Rawlins City Council meeting, Councilwoman Lewman presented the ordinance amendment for final approval, officially setting the six o’clock start time.

The measure was approved, with Councilman Bruce Seilaff casting the sole dissenting vote.

Yesterday, September 9th, Rawlins Public Information Officer Mira Miller released a statement about the meeting time change. Miller wrote that the 6:00 p.m. start time was made to better support community participation, provide more flexibility for scheduling, and help avoid late evening sessions.

The next Rawlins City Council meeting will be Tuesday, September 16th at six o’clock in the evening.
