Rawlins schools went under a lockdown order Friday while police searched for a potentially armed suspect.

Around 10:00 am Friday, the Rawlins Police Department received a call about a public disturbance. Rawlins Police Lieutenant Jared Frakes said officers noticed a wanted individual after arriving at East Pine and Colorado Streets.

Lieutenant Frakes said after spotting the officer, the man took off running. Rawlins PD, Wyoming Highway Patrol, and the Carbon County Sheriff’s Office searched for the suspect.

While looking for the man, Lt. Frakes said officers were informed that the suspect was potentially armed. The Rawlins Police Lieutenant said Victory High School and Carbon County School District One schools were instructed to secure their facilities.

Lieutenant Frakes said officers continued to search for the suspect near the Carbon County Fairgrounds. Someone witnessed a man matching the suspect’s description leaving a nearby home. Lieutenant Frakes said the suspect was arrested after a short foot chase.

Lieutenant Frakes said the suspect was not armed at the time of his arrest.

The man was originally wanted for not paying municipal fines, said Lieutenant Frakes. The Rawlins Police Lieutenant said he can’t provide more information about the suspect until he is formally charged for his attempt to evade the police.

Officers briefly closed East Daley Street Friday morning while they took the man into custody.

Lieutenant Frakes said the entire incident lasted roughly one hour.
