Winter has been tough on the City of Rawlins. Snow is piled up everywhere and more is on the way this week.

Rawlins Public Works Director Cody Dill told the city council last week that changes are needed as to how future snow emergencies are handled.

Dill said city crews finally were able to clear back streets in some neighborhoods that had been put off for weeks. Having more employees would allow him to tackle non-priority streets sooner, Dill said.

The public works chief said the city needs a new plan to deal with excessive snowfall. Dill suggested using outside contractors when city crews are overwhelmed.

Ideally, Dill said he would like to expand the public works department’s roster. With more workers and better equipment, Dill said he could get to the smaller neighborhoods faster.

The city has used same snow removal plan since 2016. Dill said he wants to work with the council to update the plan. He said he wants to expand his department, but not have workers sit idly for half the year.

The Rawlins City Council had nothing but positive things to say about the public works department and how they battled the snow. No motion was made to address the snow removal plan but the council agreed it needed to be updated.
