Colder temperatures have arrived in southern Wyoming on schedule.
To prevent your water pipes from freezing this winter, The Rawlins Utilities Department offers tips on how to protect your water supply pipes from freezing.
When water freezes, it expands, which can cause pipes to crack or burst. Rawlins Utilities Supervisor Robert Nulle presented a few tips to avoid a costly visit from a plumber.
Nulle also recommended ensuring your pipes are properly insulated, especially those resting against exterior walls. Perhaps the most proactive approach a homeowner can take is to install heat tape on their pipes. Nulle explained that the heating element works best when connected to power.
Although it may seem humorous to think of your heat tape being unplugged, don’t minimize the advice.
Rawlins Public Information Officer Mira Miller explained that it’s an easy step in the process to overlook. Utilities Supervisor Nulle added that the heating element may experience a failure.
If you have questions about heat tape, Public Information Officer Miller recommended asking the employees at your local hardware store for help.
As temperatures drop even lower, heat tape and insulation may not be enough. Utilities Supervisor Nulle said to turn on your faucets. The moving water and warm air from your home will help prevent freezing.
In an emergency, Nulle said you may use an electric heater to keep your pipes warm. However, due to the increased risk of fire, the utilities supervisor recommends saving that method as a last resort.
What should residents do if their pipes freeze and burst? Nulle said to shut off your water supply and determine how to repair the damage.
Older homes might not have an interior water shutoff valve. In that case, Public Information Officer Miller said to contact the city utilities department to shut the water supply off at the street. However, involving the city may delay repairs. If possible, Miller recommended shutting off your own water.
