A wolf, captured in British Columbia and released in Colorado in January, died after apparently being struck by a vehicle in northwest Colorado, according to an investigation conducted by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
Male wolf 2507 was found dead on May 31st. The federal agency determined the cause to be blunt force trauma sustained during a suspected vehicle collision, according to a news release from Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The release from the state wildlife agency was brief and stated that officials had no further comment on the incident.
Nine of 25 wolves released through Colorado’s voter-approved reintroduction program are dead, including six that died already this year. At least one yearling born to released wolves is also dead.
Four of the 10 wolves captured in Oregon and released in Colorado in late December of 2023 and five of the 15 wolves captured in British Columbia and released in Colorado have died.
