Former Rawlins Police Chief Mike Reed has been inducted into the Wyoming Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.

During a May 15th ceremony in Cheyenne, Reed, a former Rawlins police chief and Senior Policy Advisor for the governor’s office, was inducted into the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police Hall of Fame.

WASCOP Executive Director Allen Thompson explained his organization.

Thompson said Chief Reed was inducted into the WASCOP Hall of Fame because of his long-term dedication to law enforcement in Wyoming. Inductees must have a positive impact on the entire state, said Thompson.

Reed began his career with the Rawlins Police Department in October of 1988. In 2001, he became the chief of police for the Rawlins PD.

In 2004, Reed was voted by the Wyoming Peace Officers Association as the “Peace Officer of the Year”.

In 2012, after 23 years of serving the community, Reed retired from the Rawlins Police Department and took a job with then-Governor Matthew Mead as a Senior Policy Advisor, focusing on impaired driving issues.

Four years later, in 2016, Governor Mead appointed Reed as the State Fire Marshal, a position he held until 2023.

During the May 15th Hall of Fame induction ceremony, Reed was joined by Albany County Sheriff Jim Pond and Laramie County Sheriff Danny Glick, both retired. Thompson said the two men made lasting impacts on policing in the state and across the country.

Retired Torrington Police Chief Billy Janes was also inducted into the Wyoming Law Enforcement Hall of Fame on May 15th. Thompson said Janes is the longest serving chief of police in Torrington, holding the position for 30 years. His dedication to keeping the youth of Wyoming safe warranted his induction into the Hall of Fame, said Thompson.

Despite retiring from law enforcement in 2023, Thompson said former Rawlins Police Chief Reed continues to make an impact on the next generation of police officers through his participation in the Wyoming Association of Sheriffs and Chiefs of Police.

In its nomination letter, WASCOP writes that Reed’s long law enforcement career provides the foundation for his nomination into the Wyoming Law Enforcement Hall of Fame.
