Saint Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County is requesting donations to help needy families this Christmas.
Formed in 2022, Saint Christopher’s Highway is made up of several charity organizations and the Rawlins Police Department, all with the goal of helping stranded motorists.
For the third year in a row, St. Christopher’s Highway has arranged a reverse advent donation drive in Rawlins. Executive Director Shauna Roberts explained that the reverse advent helps local charities obtain needed items.
Unlike a traditional advent calendar where you receive a treat each day, the reverse advent asks for donations for every day of the month.
This year’s reverse advent is collecting items for 13 different Rawlins organizations, including Mike’s Big City Toy Drive, the Carbon County Senior Center, Rawlins Animal Shelter, Stepping Stones Youth Home, St. Vincent DePaul, Rawlins Elementary School, Choir Loft Thrift Store, Boys and Girls Club, Carbon County Libraries, Child Development’s Head Start Program, Pet Partners, Victim Services, and Wyo Help.
Roberts explained the type of items St. Christopher’s Highway is collecting for this year’s reverse advent.
Additionally, Roberts is asking for donations of fidget toys for children in the Victims Advocate program.
The reverse advent begins this Sunday, December 1st, with three days dedicated to gifts for teens, specifically Bluetooth speakers and headphones, gift cards, and socks and underpants. Roberts said all items can be dropped off at the Rawlins Police Station, located at 215 5th Street.
The police station lobby is open 24 hours a day.
St. Christopher’s Highway of Carbon County provides assistance to people throughout the year, not just during the holidays. Executive Director Roberts explained that the charity organization spent over $16,000 this year helping stranded motorists.
During the summer, fewer travelers seek assistance from the charity. However, Roberts reported that in October requests increased, and St. Christopher’s Highway spent $2,400 helping 33 individuals.
Roberts said St. Christopher’s Highway spends most of its funds on hotel rooms, followed by gas and bus tickets, for stranded travelers.
