The Rawlins Fire Department donated $1,500 to assist local organizations meet their missions.
Every year, the Rawlins Volunteer Fire Department holds a 5K fun run obstacle course. Fire Chief Alan Robinson said a portion of the money raised during the event goes to support the fire department. The remaining funds are donated to organizations that benefit Carbon County residents.
Every year, the Rawlins Fire Department selects different organizations to receive their donations. This year, firefighters selected the Carbon County Senior Center, Boys and Girls Club of Carbon County, and the Rawlins Elementary School Mustang Pack Program, which provides supplies and support for students.
Chief Robinson said the three organizations were not chosen for any specific reasons.
The Rawlins Fire Department donated $500 to all three organizations, totaling $1,500.
Chief Robinson said the remaining money from the 5K fun run goes toward fire department operations or to help families in need.
When the donations were announced on social media, the Rawlins Fire Department also asked for volunteers. Chief Robinson said being a volunteer firefighter comes with a free pension and life insurance.
Chief Robinson also said volunteers receive free medical transport through MASA, or the Medical Air Services Association.
The fire chief said firefighting experience isn’t required to volunteer. The department will train anyone that meets the minimum requirements. Chief Robinson acknowledged that becoming a volunteer firefighter is a tough decision, but he encouraged people to step up and help their community.
Anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter should call or visit their nearest fire station and fill out an application. In Rawlins, Chief Robinson said all applications are reviewed by an interview committee within one month of being submitted.
