The county road and bridge supervisor has asked commissioners to lower speed limits on certain unpaved roads around the county. The state may need to become involved for the the request to be approved.

At the August 6th Board of Carbon County Commissioners meeting, Kandis Fritz advised the board that she and Commission Chairwoman Sue Jones had received phone calls from citizens worried about traffic speeding through Savery. Fritz asked the board to reduce the speed on the rural stretch of County Road 561.

Unless otherwise noted, unpaved roads in Carbon County have a set speed limit of 55 miles per hour. Road and Bridge Superintendent Fritz asked for a resolution to set the speed limit on County Road 561 to 20 miles per hour.

Commissioner John Espy said he supports lowering the speed limit through Savery. However, Commissioner Espy said the Wyoming Department of Transportation may require a traffic study before the county can take action.

Road and Bridge Superintendent Fritz also asked the board to lower the speed limit on County Road 205, north of Saratoga. Since the area is zoned for residential properties, Fritz said the council may legally reduce the speed limit to 30 miles an hour without WYDOT authorization. Commission Chairwoman Sue Jones added that a segment of County Road 205 is already limited to 30 miles an hour.

If the resolution is passed, Fritz said she will ensure that motorists are aware of the new speed limit along County Road 205.

Finally, Fritz asked the board to install additional speed limit signs on County Road 401, also known as Sage Creek Road. The road and bridge superintendent said residents are requesting to reduce speeds on the southern portion of the road.

Commissioner Espy said he supports posting 25 mile an hour signs along Aspen Alley on Sage Creek Road. The commissioner said WYDOT should be consulted before approving any of the other proposed speed limit changes, however.

Commissioner Garrett Irene said he’s been contacted about lowering the speed limit on County Road 351. Commissioner Irene asked if it is possible to lower the speed limit from 65 miles per hour for safety reasons without WYDOT authorization.

Fritz said she and Carbon County Emergency Manager Lenny Layman have placed signs along Seminoe Road warning motorists of road damage.

The road and bridge superintendent said she will have a resolution to lower the speed limits on the aforementioned roads prepared by the next county commissioner meeting on August 27th.
