Get ready to pay for a big rate hike in your electric bill if you are a Rocky Mountain Power customer.
The Wyoming Public Service Commission granted the utility company approval for a double-digit rate increase. The price hike will add $14 per month on average to the bills of RMP customers.
The 10.2 percent rate increase will cost customers in Wyoming about $18.5 million.
Despite the rate increase and the resulting hardship on customers, state officials are hoping to mount a defense against the utility company to stop future yearly rate increases. Whether they can stop future rate hikes remains uncertain.
There may be no end in sight for rate hikes from the utility company based in Portland, Oregon.
RMP is planning to keep only 3 of its 22 coal-fired power plants operational by 2040 while sourcing 56% of its yearly consumption with renewable energy by then, as well.
