The Saratoga town council has agreed to the construction of a new sewer system at Shively Field.

At Tuesday’s Saratoga town council meeting, Public Works Director Emery Penner said Shively Field lacks adequate sewer services. Penner said the Airport Advisory Board considered connecting to the town’s sewer main, located across Highway 130. However, the public director said the project will be too costly.

To avoid spending upwards of $400,000 to tunnel under Highway 130, Penner said the Airport Advisory Board opted for a lift station. A sewer lift station transports wastewater from lower to higher elevations. Penner said the Impact Joint Powers Board and the Airport Advisory Board both approve of the project.

Penner said the lift station will pump the airport’s sewage to an existing town sewer line located outside of the airport property. The public works director said the pumping station is far more economical than tunneling under the highway.

Penner said a lift station will cost around $70,000.

Councilwoman Kathy Beck asked how much money the town will need to pay. Penner said the Airport Advisory Board will cover the entire cost of the project. Councilwoman Beck, satisfied with Penner’s reply, motioned to approve the lift station project.

The Saratoga town council voted to pay Engineering Associates $25,000 to design a new sewer lift station at Shively Field.
